What is the National Broadband Network?

The National Broadband Network (NBN) is an infrastructure project in Australia that aims to provide high-speed broadband access to every household and business across the country. It was first announced in 2009 by the Australian Government and is being implemented by NBN Co, a government-owned corporation.

The NBN project involves the rollout of a national network of fiber-optic cables, wireless and satellite infrastructure to deliver high-speed Internet connectivity to homes and businesses. It aims to replace the old copper network with a more advanced, future-proofed technology that will enable faster download and upload speeds, better reliability, and increased capacity for data.

The NBN has been in the works for several years now and has faced its fair share of challenges and criticisms. One of the main criticisms was the cost of the project, which has been estimated to be around $51 billion. This cost was expected to be funded through a combination of government funding and private sector investment. However, the project has faced delays and cost overruns, which have led to increased public scrutiny.

Despite these challenges, the NBN has made significant progress in delivering high-speed broadband access to Australians. As of 2021, around 11.2 million premises had been connected to the NBN, and the project is expected to be completed by the end of 2021.

The NBN provides several benefits to households and businesses across Australia. One of the most significant benefits is faster Internet speeds, which enable faster downloads and uploads, better video conferencing, and improved access to online services. It also helps to bridge the digital divide by providing broadband access to rural and remote areas of the country, which were previously underserved.

The NBN also provides economic benefits by enabling businesses to take advantage of cloud computing and other digital technologies that can improve their productivity and competitiveness. It also helps to create new jobs in the ICT industry and supports the growth of small and medium-sized enterprises.

Overall, the NBN is a significant infrastructure project that will have a transformative impact on Australia’s economy and society. While there have been challenges along the way, the NBN has the potential to deliver significant benefits to Australians for years to come.

Activa Communications provides services from multiple independent wholesale carriers each of which are interconnected with the NBN in all 121 points of interconnection in Australia. This means that we can provide carrier-diversity, or greater resiliancy by using different carriers in each location, to our customers to improve the reliability and performance of their connections.

From multi-gigabit NBN Enterprise Ethernet services down to a 25Mbit asymmetrical connect, Activa Communications can provide access to all NBN services wherever there is coverage.
