Internet speed test for MSPs
We provide an Internet Speed Test to assist customers and partners to check the performance of their connection through to a selected server.
To test your connection using the automatically selected server, simply click on Start Test below.
To select a specific server, simply click on Automatic Server Selection and choose the server you prefer, and then click on Start Test.
If you find that your Internet Speed Test results do not meet your expectations, here are a range of helpful tips to you can try to improve the result.
- Try turning it off and on again.
- In all seriousness, restarting your device and your router can resolve issues with either device which may limit your Internet Speed Test result, giving you a lower result than would be the case.
- Test your connection using a cabled connection to your router, rather than Wifi.
- Wifi networks can limit the speed of your internet connections and result in a lower Internet Speed Test result than would be the case with a direct cabled connection.
- Test your connection in isolation from other devices on your network.
- This can be done more easily with a direct cable connection than with Wifi, but if you can ensure that only the device you are running the Internet Speed Test on is using the connection, your Internet Speed Test result will be a more accurate reflection of the true speed of your service.
- Optimize your WiFi network.
- Use 5Ghz rather than 2.4Ghz where possible, as 5Ghz may be less subject to interference than the more widely used 2.4Ghz frequency band, and this can have a dramatic effect on the results of your Internet Speed Test.
- Check the channel selection of your WiFi network. In some cases, changing the channel can reduce congestion and interference for your wireless network.
- Change your DNS servers.
- DNS servers act like an “address book” for the Internet, directing your device to the correct IP addresses to access the content you have requested. DNS servers vary in performance and changing to a different DNS server can improve performance significantly. When we benchmarked the performance of our SentryNet platform against widely used DNS servers such as those provided by Google and other ISPs we found that SentryNet consistently outperformed the competition. Note however, that SentryNet is only available to customers through one of our partners, and cannot be used independently, so unfortunately using our SentryNet DNS servers won’t help with any efforts to improve your Internet Speed Test results.
- Update the firmware of your devices.
- Manufacturers release new firmware to improve security, performance and other areas and, and so ensuring that your device is on the latest firmware may improve the result of your Internet Speed Test.
- Update old equipment.
- If your equipment is old it may be time to consider updating to take advantage of the latest technology and available performance. A faster device, or router, can have a dramatic impact on the results of your Internet Speed Test.
- Contact your Internet Service Provider (ISP).
- Your ISP can confirm if your connection is being “throttled” or has any speed limits or restrictions applied, which can be the case if your service has used more than an allocated quota or limit.
- Your ISP may also be able to advise if there is a temporary problem affecting your service, so that you can run a fresh Internet Speed Test at another time when the issue is resolved.
